Electrical problem

It took a while to figure out what was the source of this problem in my 1988 740GL B230F, but whenever the car switches on the electric fan, the car then shudders and cuts out. Is there something that is likely to be the culprit that I can try replacing first, rather than replacing everything one piece at a time?
One bit of info, I havent tested to see whether the fan actually functions itself yet, but it will be the first thing I test tommorrow.
