'86 kinda starts, wont run 200

I just picked up a one owner '86 240. It will sort of start, very rough idle, then dies. There is a bit of black soot near the rear tailpipe.My son has the Bentley manual for 240's at college, so here I am on BB. Everything is connected under hood. This 240 has a more modern injection than the '83's and '84's I am a bit more familiar with. This isnt K-Jetronic, looks like the injectors are wired. There seems to be a airflow sensor ahead of the "throttle plate". This car has had maintaince, just not enought. Looks like it could use a set of plug wires, cap etc. But seems like it should idle. Any ideas would be much appreciated.Thanks.
