Accurate checking of oil on the 960 900

i find that checking oil in the morning is more accurate,or after the car has sat awhile.i've noticed that checking after a fill-up or even a little longer than that the level is not the same as it was on the morning check.i guess it takes longer for the oil to settle in the pan on these engines.having 2 of these beasts, they both do the same so i doubt there's any blockage in the return passages.my point is if you pull off the hwy. and fill up,check the level, thinking it's low you could add too much oil.anyone else noticed this?
