Hi again,

I've been meaning to ask this for a while as my previous mechanic (who has worked with our Volvo dealer workshop for the past 20 years) has this habit of overfilling things .. steering fluid, ATF, engine oil. I did queried him on this but he says it's perfectly all right. Here's a list of possible ill effects of overfilling I'm trying to put together just for my personal curiousity

Auto transmission - the manual says overfilling can cause foaming. What effect does foaming have on the tranny? In the archives someone said you should overfill manual tranny (M47s), does it apply to auto box too? My mechanic says more ATF translate to better heat absorption

Coolant - excess pressure but reservoir cap would theoretically release the excess pressure as steam assuming it's functioning

Steering Pump reservoir - no ill effect besides fluid seeping from the cap

Engine oil - more chances of leaks thru seals as they're in contact more with oil? Oil cap always greasy?

Rear axle - good as in more lubrication?

I personally believe whoever made those dipsticks must have a good reason putting the max line. I think fluid below the min is pretty much accepted as bad for everything but what bout overfilling? All and any opinions much welcomed. thanks.
