towing trailer 200 1983

my wife and I were interested in buying a pop-up tent trailer and have a 1996 Grand Voyager but found out out it will not handle the weight of 1800# enter 1983 242dl 4 speed with o/d. I have a trailer hitch bar that came with the car that bolts on the frame with u-bolts, never been used by myself. anyone have experience with this sort of thing and will it be able to handle the trailer weight or should I have one welded to the chassis?
