Cutting out badly at WOT.....MAF problem!! 700 1988

Anyone ever had this happen? Whenever I just accelerate a little and then get into it, it only has a slight skip, but when I just "romp" on the pedal it is wanting to completely die. It sounded like an intake problem because I could hear a wierd sound coming from the MAF/intake area when I let my friend give it tons of gas in park, I unplugged the MAF sensor, the car continues to run and runs normal now, can stomp the gas with no problems. I'm curious as to how the car stays running with the maf connector detached as I've had other cars that this would instantly kill. Just wondering if this is common of a broken MAF sensor, the wires and whatnot look good, no damage, so I'm curious as to how it died. I'm going to pickup one from a junkyard first before I spend the cash on a new one and see if it was just the old one or if this is a more complicated computer related problem. Thanks for any advice, opionions, etc. about this.
