I made a quick trip into town(70 miles) today to pick up a few things and my car seemed to be running great. I noticed my engine started running extremely cool on the way to town(like 7:30, 8 o'clock on the gauge). I figured my new electric fan was on full time or something.
1)I started on my way home and the problems started.
2)The stereo cut out, I figured no big deal, a loose wire, which had happened before. Solution.....turn off the stereo :)
3) Minutes later accelerating from a stop light the car felt like the clutch was slipping, only happened when I got on it. It happened in all gears.
4)I pulled over to see what was wrong and the engine seemed to be running fine, no apparent problems at idle. I left the car running.
5)I started back out and the problem started getting worse, could barely get up to speed it cut out so bad.
6)I nursed it to a parking lot where I turned it off.
7)Now it would not re-start. Later when jumped it fired right up, but it would die right away when driven, or unhooked from the jumpers.
Other info: I recently installed an electric cooling fan, have a nice high power stereo, and am running high power lights. But I don't think many of them run at the same time.
My car is now sitting at a friends house 70 miles away waiting to be fixed. He was nice enough to lend me a truck to get home. He had a newer battery I tried and the car started right up, I didn't try driving it though.
What should I do? I'm pretty sure it must be the alternator/charging system, and battery because the car started with the new battery. Are there any other possibilities as to the problem? Should I just replace the alternator and hope it works? If so can I upgrade? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I really need to get my car back on the road, and I don't want to borrow his truck for too long.
Here's a few pics of my car:
