Busted console! Help! 200 1980

The small console containing the gear positions surrounding the floor shifter just broke right in half! Old age and heat I quess. If I get another at the pick and pull,how do I get it around the shifter knob? Do I have to buy a new one and "put it together" around the shifter? Do the new ones come in a few piece? Can't figure out how the knob comes off the shifter. Thanx in advance
