new gauges, now problem with current 200 1986

Ok, I just installed a voltmeter/oil pressure gauge in my '86 240 DL. I hooked the power, ground, and lights to all the gauges through the harness from the back of the tachometer for the clock. Everything worked fine for a couple days, but now when i turn my lights on, the tach goes down to around 1300 rpm and won't move and the volmeter goes all the way down. It doesn't seem like the alternator, because the rest of the lights work fine and it is only when the main headlights are turned on that it does this. Did I wire something wrong? I tried going back to just the clock hooked into the tach, and the same still happens. I'm really confused....could it be that the alternator suddenly failed on me? The charge to the voltmeter was between 12 and 15 before but now, even with the lights off, it's right at 12. with the lights on, it drops off the scale, as if it's turned off. any help is greatly appreciated, as i'm totally baffled. thanks!
