Please help diagnose overheating problem 200

Hello all,

I’m wondering what causes my ’86 245 to overheat when driving in the city (stop-go traffic) only after I had driven it for about an hour at 75+mph.
Observations:
When doing 75+mph the temp gauge reading is normal.
During city-type driving the temp gauge also reads normal, even with the a/c running; it is only after I had driven the car at high speed that I notice the overheating problem.
Could the cooling system be the culprit? FWIW, the water pump and fan clutch were replaced within the last year. Could an improper exhaust valve-opening gap cause something like this?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.
Javier.
