I have been having a boost leak problem with the old 744Ti for a few weeks. When I drive to work in the morning, the car would perform well during the mostly level, or vacuum, sections but act as if it had a boost leak on the uphill sections, which was mostly during the last half of my commute. It's mostly uphill from the Wash DC Beltway up I270 to Gaithersburg. I suspected it was my turbo inlet hose since the bottom section at the tuebo was turning to mush. Excess blowby on an engine will do that. So I got a replacement and installed it but it seemed to have no effect. I took off some of the other interconnecting hoses and checked them for breaks. There were no slpits or cracks.
This problem has not been my top priority since I have a 1999 V70GLT and I can make it to work OK. BUt I decided to fix it this weekend.
Imade sure all the hoses were tight and drove it about 10 feet down my street and it drove so poorly I parked it.
Today, I got out the rubber hose, don't worry I didn't beat it, and listened for vacuum leaks. I could hear one but I couldn't find it. I removed the idle air control hoses and the were fine. I took the intake manifold off to look for a broken gasket and it was fine. I took the turbo inlet and outlet hoses off, as well as the compressor bypass hoses but they were all fine. they were well soaked with oil, so I really need a ring and valve seal job.
I couldn't find anything obvious so I put it all back together, started it up and drove it around the neighborhood. It worked perfectly, no leaks, no problem under boost. I went home, got some things, including my cell phone, and went to get some bits and pieces. I drove along testing boost and vacuum and no problems.
I don't know what I did, all the hose connections seemed fine, so perhaps just reseating them and reclamping them was the solution.
Now I need to get my G-valve back in it. I need valve seals and rings.
I also noticed the cyl. head inlet ports were matched to the gasket and manifold, by the factory. Looks like they took the time to get things right.
I'm going to get some new hoses to replace the 15 year old ones.
