Shift knob troubles! 200 1981

Sometimes when i get agressive on the road I shift harder than usual. This results in pulling my shift knob off! I have stopped myself from pulling the knob off now, but when my friend drove it he did the same thing. Of course this disconnects the od button and is a pain to get plugged back in. Is there any tricks to getting this knob on so it won't come off as easily? Someone else must have had this problem!
