OK, I was hoping to avoid this, but on my way home from work my automatic transmission would not shift into overdrive. The vehicle is 10 years old, and has 84,xxx miles. I was just in the garage and pulled out the overdrive relay. The solder spots looked fine and I do not have the skills or tools to re-solder the relay. The overdrive off indicator light on the instrument panel works and the relay clicks when the overdrive button is pressed. I crawled under the car and looked at the overdrive solenoid. I wiggled the wires, but didn't know what to do with the solenoid to check if it is functioning. I also checked the transmisison fluid level and it was between the normal marks.
What should my next step be? I hate to randomly purchase a new relay or solenoid and hope to fix the problem. Advice needed.
