Ignition key interchangability? 200 78/84

I just discovered, by not paying attention to what I was doing, that the ignition key from our 1978 244 fits into AND WORKS (turns, starts) our 1984 245.

Anyone else out there have this experience? I'm sure Volvo couldn't make every single ignition system unique, so there must be a certain number of duplicate keys out there. Just wondering what the odds of this happening are, and if anyone else has experienced it?

At least it simplifies the number of keys we must carry...
