After my wife sold her 1990 240 2 years ago, we are back to 240 ownership. She found a 1993 240 wagon, auto, 119K miles. It will need a good amount of refurbishing, but I've already started with an extended tuneup. I didn't like the performance or idle so much. It has had some maintenance over the years, and i did acquire some past repair/maintenance records.
Already done the following
air filter, air box thermostat (failed)
new idle control hoses, new breather box, all breather hoses, new flame trap and holder (the breather hose on top of the flame trap had a large tear)
cleaned throttle body and ICV. Set TPS per instructions.
New plugs, wires, rotor, cap,
New valve cover gasket (VC leaked and I found a completely torn gasket in the rear)
New ECT sensor; new o2 sensor
New fan clutch
New timing belt, new drive belts
New intake manifold gasket
Sent off fuel injectors for cleaning.
There are probably a few more things. At any rate, the performance and idle are considerably better, but it still has no rev-up with starting unlike our prior 1990 car. I didn't care for that function in the heat of the summer, but we are still cool in the mornings here in Boise area. Car doesn't die but doesn't idle too great for the first 20-30 seconds. After that engine seems to run well.
I noticed it has a Programma AFM and a programma -951 ECU. I just updated the fuel pump relay tonight (old one had a date of 2007 on it) and idle is better but engine is warm.
So, I'm thinking the ECU controls the rev up when starting. I have ordered a used 951 since having a spare is a good idea. Am I correct in my thinking that this is an ECU problem? Problem isn't really the correct word since starting is really OK right now, but will probably not be in the winter months. Thanks
