Alternator Exciter not automatically kicking on. 200

Hi everyone,
I noticed my Volts gauge was at 11 volts yesterday and would fluctuate from 11 to 13 volts for no apparent reason. I checked the alternator wiring and all seems well. The battery light comes on at startup and then goes out as expected. After checking the alternator this morning and tightening up the connections I took a small drive at noon and all seemed well, the volts gauge was near 13 volts. Then this afternoon I went for a drive and the volts gauge was at 11 volts and stayed there during a five minute drive. Returned home and revved the engine, when the rpm reached 2,500 the volts gauge jumped to near 13 volts. Went for a drive and volts stayed near 13 volts. Turned off engine and we're back at 11 volts.
The exciter seems to only turn on when revved to 2,500 rpm, but this afternoon was acting normal.

Could my issue be the alternator parts not getting excited?
I
Alternator is 2-3 years old and has lifetime warranty.
Car was parked for winter.
Been using for 2 months with no issue.

Thanks for all advice.
