using an o ring on the coolant /pump seal... 900

I just replaced the water pump timing belt al most ready to fire it it when I noticed the rubber seal sticking out of the back of the pump!!
A new seal>?has anyone tried sealing it w an O ring??I think the stress there is because the flange on the heater pipe is a little too far forward ,I think Im going to try a copper 1/2 pipe bracket the fix it to the block.
