lifter tightness?

Hello. I am assembling a B20, and I would like to know a method of gauging whether the lifters are a proper fit in their bores.

I am following the Vclassics excellent instructions for this engine work. If I coat the lifters with STP/oil (a 50/50 mix as per the guide) then none of them will drop through the bore by their own weight. I am guessing that this test is affected by temperature and it's in the 40's in my work space. If I clean bores and lifters with a degreaser and then lacquer thinner, the naked lifters drop straight down, ke-chunk.

Will a coating of 30-wt tell me if they have good enough clearance?

Any ideas? TIA, greez
