Sending unit failure 200 1990

Alright.. So, my gas gauge dropped off the face of the Earth, and for a couple weeks now, my 245 has been sounding like the fuel pumps been struggling. really loud and angry when i turn the key.

I peeled back the carpet and opened the dreaded hatch covering the sending unit hole. and just crusty and yep the electrical connection on the sending unit was hanging by a thread.

So, I've gotta replace some stuff. I've read enough to know not to cheap out on the sending unit. (VDO) No cheap-o's.. And OEM Volvo nut and o-ring.

Any other advice? What about that pre-pump? I don't want to drop for Bosch, and I've heard generic brands are just fine. I've also read that IPD sells a bigger, larger output pre-pump kit. What's up with that? Is it needed? Or helpful? Will I get worse mileage, or will it transform my grocery getter into a Ferrari? I know that's probably not going to happen, but what are anyones thoughts on this? Any special advice?

I really appreciate it. Oh, and can I still drive it for work purposes?

Thanks,

Bork x3
