Quad round headlights- H1 high beams don't fit- Do I have the wrong parts? 200 1980

Hello all - I've spent the last couple of days sniffing around the internet (and Brickboard) and I can't find anyone reporting this problem. I may just be crazy (or inexperienced) but I thought I'd cast a line here before checking in to the hospital. I'm guessing there's something I need to know before I buy another part.

I have a 1980 245 with quad round headlights and have finally gotten around to installing some Hella H1 high beams that I've been sitting on for a while.
When I installed the H4 low beams years ago, the H4 housing fit securely with 2 out of 3 of the "alignment tab things" lining up to the receiving end on the bucket. Everything was snug.

With the H1's, the conical rear portion of the housing is too large to fit through the round opening at the rear of the buckets. None of the alignment tabs on the housing mate with the recesses on the bucket. It's just floating. What gives?!

I've ended up with some redundancy in my parts stash and have two different generations of these H1's, both with the same Hella part numbers, both with the same fit issue. I'm guessing that I must have just picked up the wrong type of H4's but, as far as I can tell, the Hella part number (71156) seems to match with the parts that IPD and others sell as a direct replacement for sealed high beams.

I'm stumped.

It seemed like I could achieve a relatively (not really) stable installation by relying in the metal spring clips to hold everything in place but it's not especially satisfying and I'm not confident the lights will maintain proper alignment. I don't trust it.

I must be wrong about something. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
- Christopher
