I bought this car for my son (he actually wanted a boxy and safe vehicle) and have played extensively with it - pulled the head and had it machined w/ a valve job; new front end steering bits; disassembling and cleaning all of the things I can find to disassemble and clean in the FAQ; etc.
I failed the NO2 portion of my emissions inspection and that led me to a rotten boot at the vacuum fitting for the EGR valve. I am hoping that will bump my MPG up above the 20mpg mark.
Unfortunately, nothing I have done has improved power all that much. It takes forever to accelerate, especially up a hill.
On flat or slightly up-hill highway, I can maintain 70mph put there is NO acceleration if I am above 60mph. There seems to be a good 2" of pedal before I reach the breaking point which triggers kickdown. Am I crazy expecting some amount of acceleration when I press the pedal in further?
I am looking for suggestion for things to look at - fuel pump or filter? Any other valves or settings?
BTW, not being a mechanic, I have read posts talking about the timing being off, but I think it is for older models. If I have the jetronic ECU, is there anything user-servicable that will retard or advance the timing?
Thanks
