broken timing belt - 740 RWD- I call bullshit

Just wanted to clear something up, so I can maybe help someone avoid wasting their time. my timing belt just broke. I had a spare Conti belt, with the marks on it. I got the old one off, everything looked ok, I got all the timing marks on the camshaft, intermediate shaft lined up, and crankshaft at top dead center. I put the new belt on, everything was lined up perfectly and good to go. Thanks to bad advice on this forum and others, I tried rotating the crankshaft through several turns, expecting the marks to line back up. It didn't happen, so I started second guessing myself, pulled the distributor cap, took the new belt off, etc etc. A couple more hours of work. DON'T DO THIS. if the marks line up initially, you are golden. They are not going to line back up after a couple of full turns of the crankshaft, and IT DOES NOT MATTER. make sure to release the tensioner, crank down the crankshaft pulley bolt, put the #1 spark plug back in if you used the rope trick, and crank it over. If it runs, you're done. put it back together ( don't forget to put the lower cover back on before you put the crankshaft pulley on). Hope this saves some folks some time. The timing belt job is incredibly easy, and once you get the hang of it, shouldn't take you more than 2-3 hours.
