I've been replacing exhaust components on a yearly basis. NE winters and much salt on the roads will do that for you. Of course, not all the pieces go at once. So, one year its a muffler, next year the over the shaft pipe, next year the more or less straight pipe between the down pipe and the first muffler, and so on. It now looks like everything aft of the last mentioned pipe needs to be replaced. BTW, I replaced this pipe last year, and it is actually a welded on extension of the down pipe.
Now that this "71 142E has been converted to SUs, the fuel pump that used to live next to the gas tank on the passenger side is gone, and it looks as if I could hang a domestic muffler there connected to an under the shaft pipe.
There's a picture in the GALLERY of a car that appears to have that sort of set-up, but I can't find the post this picture may have been used in.

Anyway, the question is: has anyone besides AndrewC done this and would he/she be kind enough to share the experience? And if AndrewC himself would pipe up, so much the better.
Thanks,
Bob S.
