Temperature sensor functions? 900 1997

I pulled the coolant temp sensor in the thermostat housing and verified that it did trigger the CPU to start the fan by jumping across the plug terminals, but that had no effect on the temperature gauge. Does the coolant temp sensor output also control the gauge? I'm going to order parts today and want to make certain to order the right one to get the temp indicator working again.
