external/internal regulator swap 200 1981

So the internal regulated alternator in my 81 245 died, grabbed the spare one from my 79 I been holding onto in storage and its a external regulator, boo. Any way to rig the internal regulator from the 81 and plop it into the 79? I may still have the external regulator from the 79, anyway I can just wire that into the setup?
