I recently took home a 61' 544. It has been a dream to finally own one that runs and I've been enjoying it around town. The girlfriend wants me to put in seatbelts. The previous owner had removed the belts and all the hardware to mount them.
I took the belts and mounting hardware out of my 64' parts car and it appears to have a different sized bolt that mounts the seatbelts to the B-pillar. I think the bolts from the parts car are M10 x 1.5. They do not appear to fit in my 61. Initially I thought they were not going in because of overspray from the cheap paint job on it, but the ID of the b-pillar nut appears to be about 6.5mm ; my M10 bolt appears to be about 9.2mm. I don't see that going on there without a fight.
As a side note, I think the car might actually be older than a 1961 since the vin plate appears to have been swapped at some point and it has the old style master cylinder.
I went to the hardware store and it looks like a M7 x1.0 will fit in the nut in the B-pillar, but I am nervous to mess things up since the stripping the mounting hardware seems like a road I would rather not go down. Any advice?
Looking forward to being active on the RWD section again.
