I ran the car with the instrument panel unplugged... 200 1993

I changed the ignition switch on my '93 240 after the shame of hot-wiring it finally got to me. I was in a rush and it had gotten dark, so I started to drive without plugging any of the stuff on the back of the instrument panel in, thinking I'd just take care of it in the morning. On the freeway I gradually lost power (radio, lights, and eventually fuel), the same way you'd lose power from losing/shorting the alternator and draining the battery.

I had a no crank situation, with 12V even on the battery. A jump brought me back to life and I drove home (5 miles) just fine. I'm really hoping that this had something to do with the instrument panel being unplugged - any theories/wisdom?
