Can the parking brake adjuster break? 900 1993

I was in the process of tightening up my parking brake today, using the big nut behind the ashtray. Everything was going smoothly, until I tested it - after ratcheting up about halfway with fairly normal resistance, the handle then became much easier to pull, going all the way to the top. Then everything went slack. The cables under the car are intact, in fact I'd just installed the repair kit that clamps around the axle to hold the cable more securely in place.

I've tried tightening the adjuster nut again, but as I turn it I feel a 'bump' after a few revolutions and it will no longer tighten anything. Is it possible that the connection from the cable to the parking brake lever itself is bad? The FAQ has a lot of details about replacing the cables, etc but doesn't seem to address this particular issue. Anyone had a similar experience? Thanks!
