sometimes it doesn't start, sometimes it does ...then it slowly dies while driving 200

Hello all!

Just yesterday, I was runing errands and turned my '89 240 (155K miles)on, then off three times in a row (I was trying to re-park). On the 3rd try, the car didn't turn over. The lights on the dash came on, door chime was on, but the engine didn't do a THING!

I waited a few minutes after trying to turn it on 10 times, then on the 11th time, it turned over. I drove it 5 minutes, parked, then it repeated this again no start until I let it sit for at least ten minutes or so.

After an hour of the car sitting, I drove it a few miles and the power slowly started wilting away. Dash lights became dimmer, the car started running rough and I pulled over and turned it off. Then tried to start it and nothing but dash lights and door chimes, but not a peep from the engine. Waited an hour and it started, but seemed to be running on 1/2 it's power/gusto.

I also noticed the left headlight is now out and one of the rear, right tailight bulbs is out.

Things to note:

I have a new (less than a year old)starter, fuel pump and timing belt and spark plugs.

For a month now, every 1 out of 10 times I would start it, the engine would rev very high for 10 seconds, then adjust itself to a normal idle.

Other than that no issues.

Please advise!

thanks in advance!
Bek
