Hello fellow Volvo Drivers,

I just wanted to drop a message on here that may be useful to someone else out there at some point in time. I have a 1990 Volvo 740 GL with 255,000 miles with the 2.3L REX/REGINA system. It started stalling out periodically here and there and finally it got to the point where I was close to buying some sticks of dynamite from the local excavating company and blowing her to Jupiter. It would just quit on me as I was driving which was pretty scary at some points since I was cruising in traffic.

Well, when I called my mechanic as this first began to happen, he told me to check the fuel pump relay. I promptly replied to him that I had just replaced it a year ago and therefore it couldn't be the problem. Then I began to replace things one at a time to try and resolve the situation. I replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, radio suppression relay, coil pack, RPM (crankshaft positioning) sensor, ignition control module, swapped a good used fuel sending unit, and I even went as far as to get a used computer out of the scrap yard! When all was said and done, my car still kept stalling on me! I was at my wits end, so in a last desperate cry for help, I called my mechanic again four weeks later. You can guess what he said. CHECK THE FUEL PUMP RELAY!!!! So, I took out the fuel pump relay and threw in a spare that I had pulled from the scrap yard. Lo and behold my car stopped stalling! So, $500 in new parts later, all I had to do was replace that darn fuel pump relay which is a five minute job.

The moral of this story is "if your Volvo starts stalling on you, please check the fuel pump relay and replace it first before replacing 10 other things like I did!" It will save you a lot of time, money, and headaches and if this helps one person on here, I will be a happy man. Take care all.
