I have installed a loss of coolant detector in my 244GL since I had a friend's 244GL die due to overheating due to fracture of heater hoses at the rear of the engine.
But if the engine thermostat jams totally shut (or partly shut?) causing a rise in temperature gauge which is not noticed by the driver (no idiot light for temperature) until the coolant boils in the head rupturing hose(s)/expansion tank with clouds of steam, does this damage the engine? Or is the boiling & hose rupture & loss of coolant so rapid that the loss of coolant detector in effect protects the engine from a bad thermostat?
Also, should thermostats be treated as a "short-life" item and replaced say every four years or so? (I'm using Volvo "Wahler" thermostat).
