need help both altenator belts shredded 200 1987

need some help for my 87 245 wagon. on my way to work this morning. I heard a screeching sound, then shortly after my battery light and parking brake light and brake light came on. after pulling over and popping the hood seen both alternator belts shredded. the engine temp was getting hot. so i pretty much had to drive a mile at a time stop, cool down. and so on and so on. My question is what would cause both belts to go? i turned the fan and it seems to move fairly freely, although it did have a faint squeel to it, kinda like a squeeky door hinge in a home. so i don't think the water pump is bad, but then again maybe it shouldn't be making any noise at all. The bushing mount for the altenator has some wear but it didnt seem to bad. prior to all of this happening my temp gauge was always on the low side, so i dont know if that was an indicator that the waterpump was going or maybe it was the thermostat. anyway the brake lights lighting up caught my off guard as well. does anybody have any suggestions? should i plan on replacing the waterpump, thermostat, and belts and go from there? or maybe just the thermostat and belts? any input appreciated.
