ECU Contact Pin Numbering 140-160

I want to do a comprehensive resistance check from the ECU plug, but have a question as to pin numbering -- I've looked at some web resources that indicate that the pins are numbered serially from left to right (1, 2, 3 etc.). However, my Haynes 140-series manual has a wiring diagram for fuel injected (D-Jet) 140s that indicates that the pins in the ECU harness are numbered randomly.

Which is correct?
