My son’s ’69 Amazon has an annoying light rapping sound on the right front that I have traced to the brake pad guide pins being a little sloppy in the holes in the caliper. This wheel has a new caliper, a new rotor (which has a small amount of runout, but within spec. IMO), new pads and pins. The wheel bearing is tight, rotates freely and is noise free. What seems to be happening is that the rotor runout pulls the pins slightly clockwise as the wheel turns and then the pins, powered by gravity I suppose, relax back to their lower position. The net effect is a rhythmic rapping sound synced to car speed. At higher road speeds the noise disappears which I suspect is a result of air flow between the pad and rotor creating a small gap. And the sound disappears with a light application of the brake.
My questions are: Is this a common occurrence? Is there a fix for this that I am missing? Are there such a thing as oversized guide pins to eliminate the slop?
Thanks for your help fellow Brickboarders,
