Turbo Diesel Start up Question 700

I have an 86 740 turbo diesel and when I start it up for the first time each day it roars. scary roar. the idle climbs and climbs, reaches a volume that I have never heard from a car before and then finally begins to drop. When it finally reaches a normal idle, the temp gauge has registered some heat.

is this ok, should I let it do this or should I start it and shortly put it in drive and go so as to have that engine controlled by a load?
