Temp Gauge Requires A Whack To Work ..... 700 1988

Hello. Have just about worked out all the bugs / repairs needed on my recently aquired 1988 740 GLE wagon. Remaining quirk is that I have to whack / tap / bang on dash near temp gauge to get it to start working. Then it is fine and stays fine so long as I start & use car say every couple of hours. If it sits unused more then say 3x or 4x hours or overnight then I have to whack it to get it going. Since it does work when I do whack it I assume temp sender on engine is good. I think therefore problem is the temp gauge itself. Can these be cleaned or repaired ? Or best just to replace it entirely ? I am new to 740's but have had number of 240's - Do 740's have temp compensation board that in 240's most folx bypass ? Thanks for advice / help with this.
