Brake master cylander. 200 1989

The brake pedal goes down further than it should and is s/w spongy. According to the Bentley it needs a new master cylinder. The car still stops OK with a little extra pedal work.
How can I be sure it's not the power booster?
It seems an easy (flw) job to change out the master cylinder. Is that true?
All tips and precautions any Bricksters have to offer are appreciated.
