Choice of Amps & Power Output Level: Rear Deck Speaker Project 200

Hey guys,

I've got an early 80's 242 DL that I'm installing rear deck speakers in, and want to install an Amp to drive them (rear speakers only). I purchased an Alpine 9856 single CD player some time ago for this project(40 watts total), which will drive the Infinity Kappa 4" speakers installed in the upper doors.

I replaced the stock alternator when it failed a few years ago with a higher output Bosch (new) at a really good price, that I believe was rated around 100 amps (there are space restrictions that limit what you can adapt for this space).

Now I need to choose an Amp type and power level to drive the rear deck speakers, which will probably be Infinity Kappas (either 6" round or 6 x 9).

The question becomes what maker of Amp and power level should I choose to drive the rear deck speakers? I've had good luck with Alpine products over the years and may go in that direction. However, what is really necessary to drive these speakers is not clear to me. For example, Alpine makes a 40 x 4 watt amp for about $150 and 70 watt & 90 watt amps that can be had for about $300. (I'm glad to save a buck where I can, but will spend more if necessary.)

Since no subwoofer will be involed what power level should I be considering to drive the two rear speakers? Are Alpines still a good choice for the money?

I thought that I would install the amp under the passenger's front seat so clearence and heat disapation may be an issue. Thanks.

Regards, Dave
