Hello all,
I have a problem that is rather puzzling me with my 92 240 sedan, auto/trans. Every time I turned the A/C on I heard a squealing noise as soon as the clutch got activated, it got to the point that it sounded like metal grinding for a second or two. There are no noises when the A/C of off though. The noise is on at idle and stops when I accelerate.
I decided to replace the compressor with a remanufactured one thinking the clutch bearing was shut. I did d this procedure according to this posting

The problem is that I hear the exact same noises after I put in the new compressor. It still makes the squealing and grinding noises when the clutch is activated.
I have a few ideas in my mind about the source of this problem and want to put them for your consideration:
1. I got a defective reman. compressor.
2. The compressor might be installed wrong in the bracket and be misaligned it looks aligned in my opinion. I would like some pics if any of you have them available.
3. Bad crankshaft pulley or bearing. The compressor might be putting a load on the crank pulley causing to make the noise.
4. Bad Water pump, power steering pump, or alternator.
I used a stethoscope to find the noise but could not narrow it down.
Thanks in advance for your opinions and comments.
