A/C runs even with no freon?? 200

Hey everyone:

On my '90 240, I have a nonworking air-conditioner. I say non-working because I don't get the first hint of cold air out of the vents, but the compressor kicks on and runs continously...I thought most modern AC systems had a low-pressure cutoff switch to prevent burning the compressor up if the freon ran low.

When the compressor is engaged there is a steady stream of bubbles visible in the sight glass behind the passenger headlight.
