Noise from my turbo rebuild ?

Just installed a turbo rebuild on my 1991 940SE (260K miles). The mechanic said that the whirring sound that happens during turbo boost will go away. He claims it has to do with carbon deposits making the noise and should go away once they are burned off.
What could be making this noise ? Suggestions please.
