screeching sound from engine compartment 200 1990

Hello to all. I have a 1990 240 wagon that has started making a screeching sound from the engine compartant. I thought it might be one of the acessory belts. All appear good and tight,
The noise comes on when the AC compressor cycles on. Do I assume that automaticly it is the compressor or could it still be the alternator?
I am going to remove belt from compressor to isolate this. Any thoughts from anyone with similar problem would be greatfully appreciated.
