Well, it's been a long weekend, but she's back together and runing better than before (that's good, right?)
After good result from my compression test and the lack of oil-fouled plugs, I started to replace the oil seals (valve cover, breather box, fuel pump, etc) to stop my oil loss. That's when I discovered a *bad* leak in my exhaust manifold at #3 and #4. Also, if you recall #4 was "popping" for no good reason. Anyway, I pulled the manifold and found that a good piece of the #1 intake manifold was broken off. I also pulled the SUs, cleaned the heck out of them and fabricated some new carb gaskets using gasket-grade cork. I put on a new (used) manifold in excellent condition, a replacement choke cable (old one broke) and rehabbed my cast valve cover.
After all that I got the car running again, brought the idle back to something normal and took her for a drive. WOW!!
The engine feels like it gained a few HP, it's quieter. Doesn't smell anymore ('cept for the burning engine paint I put on the exhaust manifold). I think the carbs may be a little out of sync, but it runs so much better, I hardly notice. Plus that obnoxious "popping" noise in #4 is gone!!
