'need help with a dumb mistake on a power steering box 140-160

Without telling you why I did it, I gotta confess to taking the cover off the power steering box on the '71 164. The box is still in the car, which conplicates this problem: The needles of the top needle bearing are loose in a zip-lock bag bag with the cover and the rest of the bearing. Now I don't know how to keep the needles in place while reinstalling the bearing in the box.

It would be an easy deal in something like a U-joint where I could use grease to keep the needles in place, but the ATP used won't do it, and I don't know if I can use a little grease to keep them in position.

Can I use some grease, and then after everything is assembled, make several changes of ATF to wash the stuff away?

If that's not O.K, is there another suggeston.

Jim Hampton

    OOOOoooohhh....

I'd say use the grease, no more than it takes to stick the needles back in,
being sure they are good and clean. I guess the recirculating balls didn't
    come out?

ATF/PSF is pretty high detergency so it should wash out the small amount of
grease pretty readily. If you are really concerned about the grease in there
(I wouldn't be) you could run it a while and then change the fluid.

      Thanks a bunch.

That door I told you about (for 122) some time ago - was picked up by mistake by a guy who hauled away the others. It wasn't as good as I thought, and after checking on the shipping costs, it wouldn't have been worth the cost. 'sorry I didn't get the word to you sooner, but I've been away from this stuff for quite a while.

You needing a door for a 122, George? Which one? I *might* be able to help, though I might only have stuff from 2 door cars...

IF I had a right front door for a wagon without a hole in the skin it might
save me some work. 66 or earlier, with the wide "chrome" strip on the outer
            windowsill. NOT urgent!
ps: what is the VIN on your 66 wagon? I have 36025 and 44489.

            Thanks,

Hmm... I might have a door from the '57... not sure if that would work. Of course, the window and door handles would be different, and it would have the wraparound padding on the upper panel, but I would think that would all be interchangeable... I'll have a looksee. Color is light blue if it exists still. I think I've got it though.

My '66 is chassis 32417... seems a big gap twixt your late one. Perhaps mine is an early '66. I forget the build date.

                Gee, I didn't know they made 122 wagons in 1957 - B16 engine, etc?

My gray wagon is before the VIN stamped on the firewall - 36025 - so yours
is somewhat earlier than that. Must be pretty early in the year.
