240 Toolkit 200

My 1990 240 came equipped with a scissorjack /crank handle, plus the following 'comprehensive' array of tools.

1. Magician's gloves
2. Box spanner for wheelnuts
3. Box spanner crank/wheeltrim lever
4. Two open ended spanners
5. One screwdriver with 5 bits
6. Deluxe vinyl pouch

I have to say I was a little disappointed at the time (I'm over it now) but I just wondered if anyone did any better - I've always thought it a bit poor compared to say BMW, where you get a nice fitted toolbox inside the bootlid.

What you show in the pic is what I have on all my 240s, 1975-1988, except that your tools are much cleaner than mine.

Except, of course, mine didn't have the the gloves and the screwdriver bits.

What you get in a BMW or such, you pay for.

Regards,

Bob

Good point! 200

The tools are clean because they've hardly ever been used (only the wheelnut wrench in fact) I have other tools and use those - maybe Volvo reasoned, quite rightly, that most Volvo owners would already possess most of the tools they needed, so they kept the car kit to a minimum?

That's exactly what you get with a late 240. The earlier cars didn't get the nice screwdriver, since they didn't have Torx screws.

So no pliers, no adjustable wrench? Not even on the early cars?

I'm surprised - I thought maybe US cars might have more.

Thanks

Plyers? Any Volvo owner worth his/her salt carries a Leatherman! 'Nuff said.

Adjustable Wrench? All the important stuff is 8,10,11,or 12 mm and the wrenches are there or its TORX. I've seen more damage done with an improperly used Crescent Wrench or Vice Grip than I care to fix.

American Iron? Tool? HA! Hummer kit is Chinese made crap, Caddy has *On Star and Lincoln has just the jack and lug nut tool (same cheapo jack as ALL Ford products from Focus to Lincoln!

Mercedes has cut back on the tools as well, they are an option now.

BMW does know how to look after its customers but most would rather call the 24 HR service line than use the tool kit.

I am bustin' yer chops here and pardon my attempts at humor, its been a long day!

True what you say about BMW owners, many don't even know there's a toolkit!

You probably haven't seen these by the sound of it - often included in the toolkit of British cars - sometimes known as 'autowrenches'- very effective.

One of the reasons I wondered is that the Swedes produce some tools of exceptional quality and I'd just hoped to get a few more with the car!

Got an entire wooden toolbox full from an old bread truck my father in law drove in the 40's...

That type works better on 4 side nuts/bolt heads vs 6, but in a pinch...

The older cars (1800/122/544) got a very good quality combination Aligator/Crescent style wrench, I've also seen (have) one of the hubcap remover/Crescent style, don't know if both came in the tool kit or just one per car. They turn up on ebay once in a while.

By the time the 200s rolled off the line what with fuel injection and all I guess Volvo figured no one would be wrenching by the side of the road and cheapened the kit down to what you see.
