Water Pump/ Timing Belt Job 200 1989

Should I remove the water pump before I remove the timing belt cover?

My current plan of attack is to:
1. Remove belly pan and drain coolant
2. Remove Fan and shroud
3. Question...Water Pump and belts or belts & timing belt cover??

    wow rhaire knows his cars
order matters not but doing both gives you edge on wiggle room cleaning etc. leaky cam seal eats pumps donut seal so sometimes pump and tbelt go hand in hand even if pump is a-ok.

They are completely independent operations sharing no fasteners. I am not sure why people say do the pump when you do the belt. I would not do the pump unless it leaked. Volvo pumps last a long time if the alternator belts are not too tight.

      - I am not sure why people say do the pump when you do the belt.

One's half-way there already in removing the other belts and the timing cover to get a little more space. The water pump is cheap compared to the labor of having to do it separately. That's the reason why.

Anyhow... Pull the fan and clutch assembly, pull the shroud, pull the alternator and a/c drive belts, pull the timing cover, pull the timing belt, pull the H20 pump, clean area and replace pump, pressure test cooling system if you have a tester, replace timing belt, reinstall cover, pump pulley, belts, shroud, & fan. Tension belts, fill with coolant, start car and look for leaks.
