gasoline cover swinging door 200

The swinging gasoline cover door on my '88 240DL wagon won't close all the way. I thought it might be the aged rubber cowl preventing it from closing, but it's not... I guess it's some problem with the hinge itself? I can take a picture, but I don't think it would be very illuminating. I can't see anything wrong with it. Does anyone have experience with these joints no longer closing flush?

It's interesting, I've been following this forum for some time, but I don't have enough knowledge to answer any of the questions. Odd for it to be one-sided. Well, maybe I'll be able to contribute more as time goes on. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your advice fellas, it's thorough and very well explained. I'll look into the hinge and the spot weld.

Too often one's knowledge is gained at a price. With a bit of bad luck, you too can become an "expert".

Are you the original owner? Maybe the previous owner bent the hinges a little?

If the little rubber stoppers (feet, bumpers, whatever you call them) aren't deformed or otherwise seeming to keep the door from closing, then maybe the hinge itself has been distorted or "forced". One indication would be if the door's edge is not fully resting on those stoppers (assuming the stoppers are at the right "height".

If it seems to be the hinge, try bending the hinge just a little bit -- remember that like a lever (where you have the fulcrum at one extreme end) so that a little motion at one end results in a lot of motion at the other end, to adjust this door you only need to make a very slight change in the shape of the hinge to result in a big change at the far edge of the door.

I bent mine accidentally and fixed it after carefully inspecting how it works. The trouble is that the hinge is only attached to the flap at the front, and then has a rather springy bit of metal before the hinge itself. So simply pushing it shut doesn't straighten out this bit of metal - it just springs out again.
You have to wedge something in between the metal and the flap, close to the front leading edge, and then bend the hinge mounting in around this wedge.
It sounds hard to explain, but if you look closely at the way the hinge attaches to the flap you will see the problem, and how to fix it.

I had the same problem. I ended up just bending it with my hands. I fits flush now. Just go slow.

Interesting. Mine doesn't want to stay flush, it springs out most of an inch.

Look at the door and hindge closely. The hindge has a small spot weld attaching it to the door. This weld may have broken. It is tricky to see. Try closing the door slowly and looking at the hindge at the same time. If it is broken you will need to replace the door or have it welded.I replaced mine.
