Engine won't crank 900 1994

My mother drove home Fri. night from having dinner with me. Sat. a.m. she got in her 960 wagon and it wouldn't turn over. Dash lights up, but no crank. Thought maybe it was a starter problem, so we tried to shift into neutral and roll the car a few few (maybe change position of starter?), but couldn't shift it out of Park. Can't figure why we can't shift it? Any suggestions - she's have to borrow MY car. Not too thrilled about that because it's a '99 V70 AWD where the ABS and Brake lights go on and off intermittently (might scare her.) Thanks!

Can't shift out of PARK? Are you stepping on the brake pedal? If you are, and it still won't shift out, check your brake light fuse, it controls the interlock allowing the shift lever to move. Brakelights must be ON for the lever to move out of PARK. You can also move it out of park by engaging the manual bypass located somewhere around the bottom of the shift lever (where it is varies from year to year and model to model). Moving an automatic as you propose will not change the starter's position however, not even the engine's. Check out what spook suggests, see if you are getting fuel and spark.

I take it back about not being able to shift. I was telling her and my brother (the mechanic in the family) to find the Shiftlock Override button and press it. Neither could find it. So I had to drive 45 minutes to help them find it. Before I left, I took one last look at the Archives to see if anything that sounded like her problem. One person had a similar sounding problem and the solution was PNP sensor and that she should move the gear shift back and forth several times. I tried just that and wouldn't you know - it started right up! Worth the trip out there, I guess.
My daughter has our old 1995 850 sedan. Back up lights sometimes don't work and she also has starting problems on occasion. She sometimes has trouble shifting out of Park and has to use the override button, and sometimes the flashing arrow comes on for no apparent reason. COULD THIS BE THE SAME PROBLEM??? The mechanic we usually go to didn't know what to think when we told him and naturally, none of the above happened when the car was in his possession.
Thanks to you and to all who are so kind to post tips and replies! Awesome site!

    Dear Laurie,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. Yes. The RPM/Crank sensor may have failed. This sensor's signal keeps the fuel pump running, after the 1-2 second "spin-up", when you turn the key, to start the car. If you don't hear the fuel pump run, briefly, that suggests the Crank sensor has failed. It could also mean a faulty fuel pump relay.

If the car's crank sensor is the original, it is due for replacement. This sensor's wiring harness gets brittle with time/heat. When the wire insulation fails, the wires contact each other - or water gets in - and shorts the sensor.

This sensor is located atop the transmission bell housing, just behind the engine, on the passenger side (10 o'clock position, as you face the engine). It is not hard to replace. See the FAQs, under FEATURES, above.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook
