The T-5 tranny is going in!! 140-160 1971

Hello all,

I thought I would let everyone know that I am finally able to swap in a T-5 tranny into my wagon. I will also be installing my cam bought for me by my wife a year ago. I will take pics and post them along with updates and frustrations.

If anyone has done this conversion I am interested to hear how it went.

Wayne

Get the output shaft bushing and seal changed before you install the T5. It's a maintenance item. Have a tranny shop pull and push in the bushing.

I have to do mine now, a year after installation. The yoke is in a slightly different position, so the bushing will have a different wear pattern.

There is an archived thread about the install.

The Isky cam from IPD. Street performance, I think.

I am looking forward to any information that you encounter doing this swap. I am putting in a M41 in my 142 this summer, but in the future I hope to do the T5 after I can afford to redo my motor, ...I am hoping to do somehting special ala vinatge perfomance motor.

I put in a T5 a few years ago in my 1800 race car. The trans tunnel was cut up pretty bad for fitment, but that wasn't an issue for the race car. My two cents worth is as follows:

1)you should use the narrower driveshaft when you have the ford yoke welded on. It fits through the tunnel better

2) there is an on the shelf bearing for the input shaft/crank that can be purchased from motion industries (formerly bearing bearing). I just gave them the od and the id of the T5 input shaft and the overall thickness and presto chango the came up with one that was real close. it was only a little thinner than the volvo's. I use the same kind of shims that are used with the volvo bearing to take up the slack.

3) I had a custom clutch disk made that was like a regular volvo disk but a t5 sline. Quarter Master was the brand and they referred me to a distributor of theirs to have it ordered. I did the volvo sytle clutch for the sole purpose to use a stock b20 engine in the race car when the race engine was out of commission. that engine used a six bolt crank and my race engine uses a special 8 bolt that has a special race flywheel and clutch. For that set up, I order from Bob Griffith (tilton disk).

Hope this helps who ever.

Assuming that its an 82 - 93 mustang T5 the stock Volvo pilot bearing fits the
input on the trans from the 2.3 motored cars. The pilot bearing from the 5 L fits both the trans from that car and the Volvo crank. So no special bearing is necessary.

Really!? I could swear that they were different sizes. As it turns out, I just pulled a volvo bearing out of a crank...I'll go check for myself. From memory, it seems that the world class T5 (for ford) had a bigger diameter input shaft compared to the volvo's. I may be wrong, but I cant imagine that I went to the trouble of going to the bearing company and buying a bearing if I didn't know that I needed it. If I am wrong...I have to buy better drugs! :-)

That's not what I said.
Use the Volvo bearing with the T5 from the ford 2.3.
Use the Ford bearing with the T5 from the ford 5 L V8.
A "special" bearing is not necessary for either trans.
