My trunk always smells like fuel! 700

Normally I only fill my tank about half way full, (high gas prices) however over the weekend I went on a road trip and filled it up all the way. I heard what sounded like a waterfall and looked under the car. The golden fuel I just paid way too much for was running out onto the ground from the middle of the car. This morning I took the fuel pump access cover off to try and see what the cause was and found nothing. The fuel pump seal looks clean and dry. As you all know, you can’t see much else through the access hole. Does anyone know what the topside of the tank looks like or what I should be looking for? I figure it must be a hose or something on the top of the tank since I don’t get the waterfall when I fill it half way. Any help would be greatly appreciated and please let me know if you need any additional info.

I would guess that the 'o'ring is leaking. Sometimes the steel elbows that the gas hoses attach to rust and weep.

you should see a stain from the gas in that area.

It varies from year to year and from model to model but there is usually a good sized hose that comes off of the filler neck somewhere and attaches to the sending unit. It is just a big breather hose that allows the air in the tank to vacate as fast as you are filling it with fuel. When the tank gets full all the way you actually get liquid fuel in this line and it is at this point that it is possible for it to start barfing fuel out of it. Really there are only a couple of connections on that tank that are capable of leaking larger amounts of fuel and only do so when the tank is full. If the supply, return, or small vent lines were compromised they would leak all the time or in the instance of the little vent line they would leak but not large amounts like it sounds like you are loosing. Certain tanks also had a fitting on the top corner by the driveshaft that was capped off, if that developed a leak it would fit your criteria. I suggest that you roll under it with a flash light and a long telescoping mirror and have a look see.
I know the later 760's with the MLS rear ends had a pigtail filler bent hose and it was the vent hose, about 5/8", that would split and barf fuel when the tank was full. Your only other option is that it is the sending unit itself leaking around the O ring like Tony said. It is unlikely but by no means impossible.

On a different note, have you given any thought to the fact that two half tanks of gas cost the same as one whole tank?

Great info thanks. Now I have something to chew on.

To answer your question about 1/2 tanks, yes I have. Just in denial I guess. Ha! I like to fool myself into believing I'm not spending $60 a month on gas.

See that? One man's trash is another man's treasure. I run through about 2.0/2.5 tanks of gas a month to the tune of 45.00-50.00 a whack. I wish I was spending 60.00 a month.

Funny story: Amongst us Volvo techs there was one guy that always put $5.00 in the tank. I can't tell you the times I've seen him walk onto the lot because he was out of fuel.
One day while standing on his side yard shooting the breeze a full size truck barrels around the corner and piles into the rear end of this guys trailer and his Grampa's '64 Mustang. They continue to tear off down the street and of course my buddy is in pursuit. He catches up to the about 2 miles away, just as he runs out of gas!!!
Now I don't know if not catching them was a good thing or not, might've saved his life for all we know but the one thing I do know is that my knuckle head buddy now fills the tank.

Let us know what your leak was and if you got it handled.
